Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs: Types and Usage

Oil & Gas Plug

Inflatable Pipe Plugs are made of SBR+NR rubber reinforced with strong fabrics making them suitable for wastewater applications but cannot be used for oil & gas applications.

What is Oil & Gas Pipe Plug?

An Oil & Gas Pipe Plug is made of high-quality nitrile rubber which has an excellent resistance to petrochemicals and it’s used to seal and block pipelines where the media is gas, oil, petroleum or hydrocarbon.

PlugCo offers a wide range of Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs, including multi-size models, single size models and flow-through models.

Multi-Size Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs

The GP model is a multi-size plug, which means that a single model can be used for many pipe diameters. For example, GP6001200 can be used for any pipe diameters between 600mm and 1200mm. This model offers a cost-effective solution for the end user.

In addition, this model is suitable when the size of the manhole is smaller than the pipe diameter.

PlugCo offers multi-size models for diameters starting from 25mm up to 2800mm.

Single-Size Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs

The MGP models are single size, which means that a model can be used only for one pipe diameter. This model is designed for small pipe diameters up to 300mm.

Single-size models are ideal when the end user needs to block different pipe sizes simultaneously or a specific pipe size, offering an economical solution compared to multi-size models.

Flow-Through Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs

The GPB models include a bypass connection, allowing flow to pass through the plug.

This design is particularly useful when a complete shutdown of the pipe is not possible during operations.

It allows the pipeline to remain open, with the flow redirected through the plug’s bypass line.

Additionally, this model can be used to inject nitrogen or other fluids/gases into the pipeline for cleaning purposes.

Why to Use Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs?

While the features of Oil & Gas Pipe Plugs are similar to standard Inflatable Pipe Plugs, the key difference lies in the material.

Using standard pipe plugs in an oil and gas environment can damage the rubber, leading to plug bursting or loss of sealing capability.

Therefore, the type of media in the pipeline is a critical factor when selecting the correct pipe plug model.

Choosing the proper Oil & Gas Pipe Plug ensures safe, reliable, and long-lasting pipeline isolation.
