When it comes to the usage of pipe plugs, avoiding common mistakes is crucial to ensure both safety and efficiency.
Over-Inflating the Plug
One of the most frequent errors is over-inflating the plug beyond the PlugCo’s recommended pressure. Over-inflation can lead to plug rupture or damage to the pipe itself, generating serious safety risks and costly repairs. Always use PlugCo’s Calibrated Control Device and pay attention to the inflation pressure instructed by PlugCo.
Lack of Pipe Inspection
Neglecting to inspect the plug and surrounding pipe area before inflation is among the common mistakes while using the pipe plugs. Dirt, debris, or sharp edges can damage the plug or at least affect its friction force with the pipe, causing leaks or burst. Make it a habit to thoroughly clean and examine the plug and pipe surface prior to inflation.
Wrong Choice of Control Device
Using the wrong control device or rushing the inflation process can result in uneven pressure distribution. This not only reduces the effectiveness of the seal but also increases the risk of the plug slipping, which can lead to rupture during use. This is why we strongly recommend our clients to always use PlugCo’s Pressure Control Device for a safer application.
Unmonitored Long-Term Application
Never leave an inflated pipe plug unattended for long periods without proper monitoring. Regular checks during operation help detect any pressure drops or signs of wear early, allowing prompt corrective action. Otherwise, PlugCo made it possible for the inflatable pipe plugs to be automatically monitored during the long-term applications. This is thanks to its Smart Pressure Control System (SPCS) which maintains continuous pressure control and automatic inflation/deflation.
Non-Bracing or Improper Support of the Pipe Plug
Bracing and Supporting the Pipe Plug against the Back Pressure is crucial and needs to be arranged in a correct way. Never use the hooks on the plugs for installing the support as they are meant to be used for transporting the plug only.
Unexpected Increase of Back Pressure
In case there is a risk of the back pressure to increase above the meant pressure, it is very important to use PlugCo’s advanced pressure monitoring and alarm systems to help monitor the back pressure and to warn the works nearby when the set value is reached.
The cases mentioned above are just a few of the many possible mistakes that can occur during the use of pipe plugs. This is why we always emphasize that pipe plugs must be used by well-trained personnel, and that PlugCo’s User Manual and Safety Instructions must be followed at all times.
