How to Use a Pipe Plug

A pipe plug is a product made of rubber. It is named differently in different areas. Some of these are: Pipe Plug, Pipe Stopper, Pipe Balloon, Pipe Bung or Pipe Cushion. Pipe Plug and Pipe Stopper are the most used ones. In addition, it can be stated that the product’s size can vary depending on air pressure by adding the words “inflatable, expandable or pneumatic”.

Inflatable Pipe Plugs are pretty underrated products. People don’t have much information about them since they are used in a specific field. So, people have to search the internet a lot to find proper instructions on how to use them. The ones to find a video from YouTube are the luckiest ones. PlugCo provides many videos ( to help the end-users and get familiar about inflatable pipe plugs.

We need 4 main tools in the usage of a pipe plug. These are the Pipe Plug, Air Source, Inflation Hose and a Pressure Control Device. The Pipe Plug is produced with rubber reinforced by fiber cords. In the head part, there is an inflation port and eye bolts. An inflation hose is attached to the inflation port. It is pretty easy to connect through the inflation port since it has quick coupling. Inflation hoses that are produced by PlugCo are usually 10 meters long. Then this hose is connected to an air supply. This source can be an air compressor or a hand pump. With this equipment, you can easily use an inflatable pipe plug.

How to Use a Pipe Plug

When using the pipe plug, it is necessary to read the safety instructions. Don’t start using the inflatable pipe plug without reading the safety instructions.

After providing all the security measures, the pipe plug is placed in the pipe. Its position must be just in the center of the pipe. It should be ensured that the pipe plug is right in the center by measuring because if the pipe plug is just a few centimeters away from the center, it can affect the area of contact pipe and rubber body of the plug and lead to unwanted consequences. After placing the pipe plug you can start the inflating process. During this process, use PlugCo Pressure Control Device. This prevents it from getting over-inflated. With the help of a Pressure Gauge, the pressure inside the plug must be tracked. Never inflate it more than the value of pressure remarked on the pipe plug. After reaching the right value of pressure, the inflation stops and inflatable pipe plug starts to hold water behind. Prevention must be made to ensure that the pipe plug doesn’t slip away when there is pressure behind it. After the job is done, the water pressure behind the plug must be discharged because filling air into the plug will reduce the frictional force and the plug will start to slip away. This could damage the plug. After all the water is discharged, the pipe plug is deflated with an air discharge valve. Then it is removed from the pipe with the eye bolts on it. After every usage the inflatable pipe plug should be examined to make sure that there are no scratches or cuts. Next, the plug must go under a leakage test with soapsuds and air leaks must be checked. If the plug is all good, it should be kept in a cool and dry place for next sealing operation.
